Remember the pre-Interstate days when cross country travel on the nation’s highways was less hectic and more laid back? I’ve found a tonic in traveling across America’s scenic byways and reminiscing about travel in the first half of the 20th century. One of my favorite routes is Indiana’s section of the National Road.

The National Road was the first major U.S. road built with federal funds and the most important route linking the Midwest with the Atlantic seaboard in the early 19th century. Construction of the Indiana route from Richmond to West Terre Haute took place between 1827 and 1835. Today’s National Road survives earlier competition from railroads, interurbans, and the Interstate System. More than 165 years later, Indiana’s National Road serves as a National Scenic Byway where you can kick-back and reminisce about travel in the first half of the 20th Century.

This self-guided tour is about 168 miles long and approximately four hours travel time. Travel time excludes a lengthy stop at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (on track 19). The audio portion of the tour is approximately 40 minutes total for 33 sites

Sites include: Madonna of the Trail, Miller Milkhouse, Wayne County Historical Society, Wayne County Courthouse, Stone Mile Markers, Lantz House Inn, Model T Ford Museum, Huddleston Farm House Inn Museum, Dunreth Old Road Section, Trumps Texaco Museum, James Whitcomb Riley Home, Ford Motor Co. Assembly Branch, Indiana Centennial Monument, Cole Motor Car Co., Monument Circle, National Road Monuments @ State House, Old Trails Building, Washington Street Bridge, Duesenberg Motors, Co., Marmon Buildings, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, Louis Chevrolet Memorial, Marion/Overland/Empire/Elgin building.
