Indianapolis Automobile Museum
Celebrating
Indianapolis automotive history
Welcome! This web site is meant to provide an overview of an effort to create a museum in
Indianapolis devoted to its rich automotive historical heritage, the wheeled industry of Indianapolis,
the field of automobile related architecture, and other auto-related topics.
At one time, Indianapolis, with over 40 different manufacturers, ranked second to Cleveland as
Detroit's chief rival for the title of the nation's auto capital. Until 1905 Indianapolis contained
more auto plants than any city in Michigan. It is the intent of this project to research, assemble,
catalog, index, and conserve artifacts depicting the automotive manufacturing heritage in
Indianapolis in order to preserve and present a historical account. Secondarily, it is proposed that
this museum be a clearing house of information related to buildings such as factories, showrooms,
gas stations, parking garages, fire stations, roads, highways, etc.
