Check out the "Grave in the Middle of the Road" in south central Indiana today. If you’re traveling on Interstate 65 in south central Indiana with 20 or 30 minutes to spare, you may want to visit the “Grave in the Middle of the Road.” This has to be one Indiana’s most unusual burial sites. The grave is in south Johnson County on C.R. 400 South about 1.25 miles east of U.S. 31.
"Grave in the Middle of the Road" in south central Indiana Later on, a foot path developed through the small cemetery. When the county decided to relocate the graves for a county road improvement, her grandson, Daniel G. Doty, protected her gravesite by staying there with his gun in hand to deter relocation. It worked. In 1912, a concrete slab was placed over the grave and marker. A historical marker was placed at the site in 1982 by her great, great, grandson Kenneth F. Blackwell and his son Richard Blackwell. Today, the grave is still in the middle of the road. Each end of the hill is marked with a highway sign for a divided road. On the sign, where the median would normally be, is a cross designating the grave. So, if this unique bit of Americana seems interesting, check it out. Getting There: On Interstate 65 south go to the Frankiln exit, and go west on S.R. 44 to U.S. 31. Go south to County Road 400 South, and then east about 1.25 miles to the Grave. On Interstate 65 north of Columbus, go to the Edinburgh exit, and go north on U.S. 31 to County Road 400 South.
